Case Study: Consultant

Geotagging like airlines

Michael

The situation

Michael is a consultant. His job involves frequent and worldwide travelling on various assignments.

The challenge

Michael usually spends more time per month on a plane than most people do in a decade. He needs a software tool that allows him to easily keep track of the documents that come with each assignment.

He is intrigued by his professional digital camera that comes with a GPS receiver. Michael’s laptop can already use the GPS location that’s embedded in each picture, but he wants at least the same functionality for all his other files like Word documents, contacts, calendar entries, spreadsheets, and many more.

Our recipe for success

Our head developer has got some history in aviation, so we know exactly how to give Michael the tools he needs.

For starters, liquidFOLDERS supports GPS coordinates just like Michael’s imaging software does—but for all file formats, not just pictures. In addition, each file can be tagged with human-readable location names like "My house" or "Downtown" in case you don’t have the GPS coordinates at hand. Of course, liquidFOLDERS supports queries on the location name.

The killer feature for Michael is the third location attribute: IATA airport codes. Most flyers know these three letter codes from their baggage tags—liquidFOLDERS uses them to tag files! When Michael sets the IATA code for his files, he can also choose to set or overwrite their GPS location and location name in the same step.

After tagging his files, Michael can not only do a location-based search on them. The StoreManager makes it possible to arrange the documents in regard to their location, and then visualize them on a 3D globe. Why don’t you use liquidFOLDERS to find your files?
